Latest MAP Surgical Mission Prepares to Leave for Gaza
On a chilly London morning a team of orthopaedic surgeons at Kings Hospital prepared for their upcoming mission to Gaza that leaves this Saturday.
The team will be taking with them a huge range of essential equipment to help them perform complex reconstructive surgery to those Palestinians badly injured during the recent attacks on Gaza.
One of the surgeons commented that they are taking out "enough material to set up a small emergency hospital". The team of six will be taking over £160,000 worth of medical equipment into Gaza ranging from bone cement, drill bits, clamps and wires to specialist anaesthetic kit.
Dr Graeme Groom explained that "the challenge is huge". Over 10,000 Palestinians were injured in the 51 day long assault that started in July and hundreds will require a series of complex reconstructive surgeries to help them put their lives back together.
Stocks of both medicines and equipment in Gaza's hospitals remains at perilously low levels with Palestinian medics forced to mix and match and reuse equipment in order to get by.
