Human Rights in the occupied Palestinian territory: Health, gender and economic impacts of prolonged occupation

Tuesday 20 March 2018

12:00 – 13:30

Room XXIII, Palais des Nations, Geneva

The event will discuss how occupation, blockade and closure are violating the economic, social and cultural rights of Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

Our panellists, comprising UN Special Rapporteur Professor Michael Lynk and representatives of Palestinian NGOs, will detail the long-term and ongoing impacts of prolonged occupation on access to health and the development of healthcare, on livelihoods and the Palestinian economy. They will discuss the gendered impact of violations of International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian Law in the oPt on Palestinian women, with a specific focus on health and livelihoods in Gaza and the situation in East Jerusalem.

The panel will explore action the international community should take to address pervasive violations of international law in the oPt, and to ensure accountability and non-recurrence.

The panellists

Moderator: Neil Sammonds, Advocacy and Campaigns Director of Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP)

Prof. Michael Lynk, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967

Randa Siniora, General Director of the Women's Center for Legal Aid and Counselling (WCLAC)
