Six months on from the devastating conflict in Gaza, world-renowned violinist Nigel Kennedy is to perform a concert in support of projects to meet the urgent medical needs of Palestinians worst affected by the conflict, as well as those suffering severe humanitarian hardship in the West Bank and Lebanon.
This concert comes as part of a series of humanitarian benefit performances arranged by campaigning lawyer Michael Mansfield QC, who has chosen to support a collection of charities close to his heart in a series of fundraising evenings running from 7th-10th April. Nigel Kennedy will kick off the series, organised by Anna Christian Productions, with his performance on Monday 9th March at The Assembly in Royal Leamington Spa.
Michael Mansfield QC said “I am delighted that Nigel has kindly agreed to be part of this ambitious and unique project and believe it is an excellent way to start our “Human Aid” fundraising campaign which will continue between 7 and 10 April 2015. The people not only of Leamington Spa, but the wider area, will enjoy the diversity this event will bring to The Assembly Rooms.”
Tony Laurance, CEO of MAP said “This concert comes at a crucial time for our work in Gaza. Six months on from the conflict reconstruction has stalled and the health services are over-burdened, under-resourced, and struggling to cope. The proceeds from this concert will enable us to continue to rebuild the lives of those most seriously injured last July, as well as supporting the urgent health needs of Palestinians across the region. We are hugely grateful to both Michael Mansfield QC and Nigel Kennedy for their generous support, and hope all who attend have a wonderful evening.”
Last summer's 51-day conflict in Gaza killed over 1,400 Palestinian civilians (including more than 500 children), and left some 11,000 injured and over 100,000 displaced. In response, MAP has been working with the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DfID) to deploy small teams of British surgeons to Gaza to undertake specialised surgery for some of the injured, and to help train local doctors.
