In memory of Dr Jean Bowyer

Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) staff, trustees, and supporters were sad to learn that Dr Jean Bowyer passed away on 20 January 2025.

Jean served as a MAP trustee from 2013 until 2022 and was chair of our Programmes Advisory Panel for several years. Her tireless dedication and commitment to our work was valued by us all and she will be greatly missed.

Her passion for improving the health of Palestinian children as well as her knowledge of the context in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) and Lebanon made her an exemplary trustee. She provided exceptional guidance to MAP’s programmes teams in designing our neonatal and child health programmes in Lebanon and the oPt, and was highly respected by health professionals in the region.

MAP continued to work closely with Jean after she stepped down as trustee. In recent years, Jean was a leading figure in several of MAP’s child health programmes, including an ambitious programme to identify and manage developmental disabilities in children in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon.

She led a successful evaluation of MAP’s neonatal care work in Gaza in 2023, and in recent years developed an online neonatal care education and training package which MAP and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health will roll out to doctors and nurses in Gaza and the West Bank later this year.

We send our condolences to Jean’s loved ones.
